West View Elementary School is situated on 12.3 acres at 3401 West Gilbert Street, Muncie, Indiana. The school was originally built in 1953. At that time it had 2 wings with a total of 11 classrooms, a multipurpose room, and offices. Another wing with 5 classrooms was added in 1958. In 1961, because of a large increase in enrollment, the south wing was expanded to accommodate 6 more classrooms (during that period, the enrollment often exceeded 700 students). In 1996, further renovation was done to the building. A new heating/cooling system with central air conditioning was installed, new lighting was added and electrical wiring was upgraded. During the summer of 1999, each room was wired for computer network and Internet accessibility. Major renovation was completed in 2008, including new office space, a new gymnasium, a new library/media center, a new front entrance, new windows, sidewalks, etc., as well as remodeling all classrooms.
As other schools closed, West View's enrollment increased. Students who had previously attended Emerson, Riley, Forest Park and Morrison Mock Schools were transferred into the West View district.
Since 1954, there has been very active and strong parent participation in the West View Community Association. Not only have large number of West View parents offered countless hours of volunteer support to the staff and students, but the association has provided much financial support through fundraising efforts.
The Annual Spring Festival has become a major tradition at West View, as has the annual "Cheese and Sausage" fundraiser.
Encourage each student to participate in extracurricular activities as well as academics has always been emphasized. West View selected "All Stars" as the school spirit symbol, rather than the usual animal mascot, to recognize that every student is a "star" in one way or another.
West View is presently a full-service school with an enrollment of 320 students. The 35-member staff is comprised of a principal, 14 classroom teachers, music, art and physical education teachers, a data coach and full and part time interventionists, a counselor, a full-time nurse, a resource/hearing impaired teacher, a speech/language pathologist, a part-time psychologist, a secretary, a media specialist, a library assistant, a building instructional assistant, three cafeteria assistants, and two custodians.
